His reign (1872–1889) was marked by unwavering bravery, visionary leadership, and an unyielding commitment to the unity and sovereignty of the Ethiopian Empire. As we reflect on his contributions, we also acknowledge the challenges he faced, including the sabotage by his successor, Emperor Menelik II, which tarnished the legacy of this great leader.
A Legacy of Bravery and Battle Successes**
Emperor Yohannes IV was a warrior-king who led from the front, defending Ethiopia against foreign invasions and internal rebellions. The Sabotage by Emperor Menelik II
Despite his monumental achievements, Emperor Yohannes IV’s legacy was undermined by the actions of his successor, Emperor Menelik II. While Menelik is often celebrated for his role in the Battle of Adwa, his rise to power was marked by betrayal and sabotage:
1. Withholding Support at Metemma: During the Battle of Metemma, Menelik failed to send reinforcements to Yohannes IV, despite being called upon. This lack of support contributed to Yohannes’s tragic death on the battlefield.
2. Undermining Yohannes’s Authority: Even before Yohannes’s death, Menelik actively worked to expand his own power base in Shewa, often disregarding the emperor’s directives and weakening the central authority.
3. Erasure of Yohannes’s Legacy: After ascending to the throne, Menelik focused on promoting his own achievements while downplaying the contributions of Yohannes IV. This deliberate erasure has led to Yohannes being overshadowed in Ethiopian history. This erasure still continues.
